On May 29th from 16.00 till 02.00 BRAT! festival is happening at De Loods Groningen. This vibrant event embodies a simple yet pivotal concept: to celebrate and amplify the voices of women in the music scene. BRAT!’s aim is to create an atmosphere of inclusiveness and empowerment, where the people of Groningen can shake their heads and dance to the fierce sounds of local performers. Because this is what it means to be a brat – to be fierce, energetic, and rebellious.
But why a BRAT! festival? The inspiration behind the BRAT! festival stems from the Riot Grrrl movement, an underground punk feminist movement from the 1990s. Riot Grrrls acted not according to the imposed rules, were empowered by their music, and used it as a tool for social and political activism. BRAT! is our contemporary twist, our vibrant continuation, our spirited celebration of the values. It draws inspiration from this rebellious spirit and aims to be a powerful medium that not only speaks but shouts and announces the voices of womxn in the music scene. The organizers want to make sure that every aspect of the event is infused with feminist vibrations and the atmosphere pulsates with the spirit of the Grrrls. For BRAT! is more than just a festival—it’s a declaration of intent, a call to action, a space of acceptance and diversity.
In alignment with these principles, the lineup embraces diversity in its fullest sense. From post-punk sounds, to shoegaze heaviness or hypnotic bass, to acoustic guitars. Bands, solo songwriters, and DJs. You will experience all of this and more at BRAT!
